FAQ

Who is this item designed for?

The Ocean Jacket is designed for sailors engaged in offshore and ocean sailing, facing demanding and constantly changing weather conditions. It is intended for those who sail year-round, including winter, and require the highest level of protection and comfort for long periods on board.

What conditions is this item designed for?

The Ocean Jacket is made using a Toray fabric, developed by the Japanese group recognized as a global leader in advanced technical materials, widely used for membranes and textiles in the most extreme applications. It features a four-layer construction with mechanical stretch, achieved without the use of elastane. This structure combines high waterproof performance, breathability and abrasion resistance, with an extremely fine inner protective lining that allows the jacket to be worn even without an intermediate layer.

What fabric is this item made of?

The added value of the Ocean Jacket lies in its development alongside ocean sailors and in testing carried out during real offshore challenges, including solo and crewed round-the-world races such as the Vendée Globe and the Jules Verne Trophy. The result is a lighter, more comfortable and more efficient offshore jacket, designed to reduce fatigue and improve freedom of movement without compromising protection.

What advantages does this item add?

The Ocean Jacket features 30,000 mm waterproofing, 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability, a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment, mechanically stretch fabric, waterproof YKK Aquaguard zippers, a high collar with face protection, a high-visibility hood with transparent side inserts, double adjustable cuffs, chest hand-warmer pockets, a reinforced seat area, and reflective patches on shoulders, sleeves, hood and collar.

Description

Ocean Jacket represents the highest level of SLAM’s technical research in offshore and ocean sailing. It is not a product born in a laboratory, but at sea, developed side by side with French ocean navigators involved in solo, double-handed and crewed offshore campaigns on high-speed foiling yachts, where conditions change continuously and demands are uncompromising. Ocean Jacket prototypes were tested during real transoceanic passages within SLAM’s Beyond the Horizon project, together with Sébastien Simon, Arnaud Boissières, Louis Duc and the sailors of The Famous Project. These tests took place in cold, wind, rain, continuous waves and long periods of use without the possibility of changing gear. It was in this environment that SLAM made a decisive move toward lighter materials, initially met with understandable skepticism by navigators accustomed to much heavier and bulkier offshore gear. Sea trials confirmed the direction: greater comfort, freedom of movement and reduced fatigue, without compromising protection. The fabric has been developed in partnership with Toray, one of the world’s leading references in high-performance technical materials. The 4-layer construction combines a durable outer fabric, a functional coating, a hydrophilic membrane and an ultra-fine internal protective knit. This structure delivers high waterproof performance, rated at 30,000 mm, while maintaining breathability of 10,000 g/m²/24h, in a material that is significantly lighter than previous generations. The choice of mechanical stretch, achieved without the use of elastane, improves fit and freedom of movement while increasing abrasion resistance. This allows overall volume and weight to be reduced, improving efficiency during long offshore passages. Every detail is designed for real ocean use. The collar is wide, high and fully protective, with a grid fleece lining that provides warmth while maintaining breathability. The front storm flap, also featuring a reflective application, extends up to cover the face below the eyes, increasing protection in the harshest conditions. The high-visibility hood is integrated into the collar and features transparent side panels to enhance peripheral vision, a structured peak, drainage channels and multiple adjustment points. The front closure uses fully taped YKK Aquaguard zippers, engineered for intensive use and offering reliable protection against wind and water. Chest hand-warmer pockets are fitted with waterproof zippers and removable fleece lining to facilitate drying. Deep cargo pockets with protective flaps and anti-water, anti-wind construction remain accessible even while sailing. Cuffs are adjustable with a dual internal and external system, while waist adjustment and the extended back length ensure effective coverage even when seated on deck. The reinforced rear panel is designed to withstand continuous abrasion, and reflective details on shoulders, sleeves, hood and storm flap improve visibility in low-light conditions. Ocean Jacket is built for true offshore and ocean sailing, where comfort and protection are not optional, but essential elements for safety and sustained performance over time.
