37th AMERICA'S CUP MATCH

SLAM with Emirates Team New Zealand won the 37th America's Cup

Since 1851, the America's Cup has represented the pinnacle of sailing, a world-class event in which to discover increasingly cutting-edge designs and technologies in action and propels us towards new frontiers, thanks to the introduction of foiling. For this 37th edition, the adventure began in September 2023 with the first AC Preliminary Regatta and kept us in suspense until October 2024 when the 37th America's Cup Match was held, won against Ineos Britannia 7-2.

It is with a great deal of pride and enthusiasm that we stand side-by-side with the Defender Emirates Team New Zealand as Official Technical Apparel Supplier.

Emirates Team New Zealand

SLAM | Immagine del paragrafo

has always stood out in the sailing world for its indomitable spirit and passion for innovation. The Team, led by global legend Grant Dalton and already a four-time winner of the Auld Mug (1995, 2017, 2000, 2021), is ready to defend the world's oldest sporting trophy in Barcelona in October 2024.

Never intimidated, the team has paved the way with avant-garde designs that have shaped the history of the America's Cup.

If there is one clear message to be read in how they sail, it is that great goals can be achieved by trusting in one's values, with tenacity, team spirit, a constant strive towards improvement and by believing in the impossible, conceiving "out of the box" projects that turn out to be as ingenious as they are successful.

What innovations has the Team brought to this edition? Let’s hear it from Kevin Shoebridge.

Louis Vuitton Cup Challenger Selection Series

The regattas that decide who will be the challenging team to face the Defender represent a moment of high tension where strategies and innovations are put to the test on the water. The Louis Vuitton Cup included a double Round Robin phase (29 August-11 September) that determined the first four classified teams; this was followed by the Semi-finals (14-23 September) and then the Final Match Race (26 September-5 or 7 October) that decreed Ineos Britannia the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, against Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. Now it is time for the 37th America's Cup in which the Challenger team is taking on Emirates Team New Zealand, the Defender.

Unicredit Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup: the future is now!

DISCOVER THE CREWS

The 37th edition included an important step forward: the Youth & Puig Women's America's Cup.

Emirates Team New Zealand, the Defender and thus decision-maker regarding the rules and formula of the next edition of the America's Cup, worked to give this event the spotlight it deserved: a commitment that reflected the Team’s vision of an inclusive future for sailing, highlighting young talents and enhancing the role of women throughout the sport. The Youth America's Cup was held from 17th to 26th September, and the Women’s America's Cup from 5th to 13th October, on board the AC40s, the new one-design class designed by Emirates Team New Zealand and built by McConaghy. Twelve nations participated, represented by the best talents in their respective categories. New Zealand also selected five young men and five women, based on their sailing experience, skills, leadership and teamwork qualities, and individual motivation. As of February, they had been training on the AC40s to identify the most suitable roles.

It took 173 years but the America's Cup is finally a woman’s game

It took 173 years but the America's Cup is finally a woman’s game

Women's Sailing: A Journey of Passion and Opportunity through the History of Yachting.

After 173 years, the America's Cup now finally includes women sailors, thanks to the Puig Women's America’s Cup, and SLAM is proud to stand alongside the defender Emirates Team New Zealand, who for this edition of Cup has also proposed this addition, along with that of the equally innovative e-sailing competition. While on the one hand demonstrating and exalting the clear adaptability of the AC40 for multiple events, the inclusion of a women’s AC is also a symbol of the defending team’s sensitivitytowards an event that should be as inclusive as it is innovative.

Barcelona Preliminary Regatta: for the first time, all teams raced on AC75s

The final Preliminary Regatta, in which for the first time all 6 teams raced on board the brand new AC75 boats, took place in Barcelona in August 2024. This was an era-defining event: the 6 teams flew ahead aboard the new AC75s, and a new page in foiling history was written on the waves of the Catalan Sea. It was here that all the teams played their cards, and these unstoppable forces faced each other, putting to the test all the technical and strategic choices made in anticipation of this final act of the America's Cup.

Barcelona Preliminary Regatta

Barcelona Preliminary Regatta

Barcelona became the first city in history to host an edition of both the Olympic Games and the America's Cup. Starting on 22nd August, the first match races kicked off with the Barcelona Preliminary Regatta, a warm-up ahead of the Louis Vuitton Cup. This coveted trophy determined which challenger would take on the defender Emirates Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug. In the Louis Vuitton 37th America's Cup, there was no second place: it was win or lose—a tradition that had defined the event for over 173 years. This was the first battle fought between the new AC75s, a battle that did not lack innovation or surprises. After days, months, and years of planning, after research, testing, and training, it all finally came down to the moment everyone had been waiting for: the head-to-head match races of the Barcelona Preliminary Regatta, which took place from 22nd to 25th August. During this phase of the competition and the subsequent first round robin of the Louis Vuitton Cup (29th August – 8th September), Emirates Team New Zealand raced against the other teams and then waited until the winner of the LVC final was declared (26th September – 7th October); only then did the team know the identity of its challenger for the 37th America's Cup (12th - 27th October).

Team training

Emirates Team New Zealand's preparation period is a dance of precision and technical perfection, in which every single element, from tactics to technology, is fundamentally important in defining the course towards Barcelona.

Since February, Emirates Team New Zealand has been in the thick of their summer training programme in Auckland. The Team initially trained with the modified AC 40, known as the 'LEQ12', and then with the new AC 75 boat, launched and built in New Zealand for the 'constructed-in-country' rule. After some "at home" training in the Gulf of Hauraki, the boat will arrive in Barcelona, host city of the 37th America's Cup, after a voyage of almost 50 days.

The countless tests carried out in the period leading up to the launch influenced and characterised the very final choices, including, for example, on the final shape and complex characteristics of the new foils onboard Boat 3.

This was a considerably intense period for the entire team, both at the base at Wynyard Point in Auckland and at the yard in Albany, where the Emirates Team New Zealand boats took shape. As well as for the entire team of builders who worked tirelessly to make the design a reality.

Jeddah, 2nd Preliminary Regatta: Emirates Team New Zealand are victorious

The second preliminary Regattas took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Emirates Team New Zealand (Peter Burling, Nathan Outteridge, Blair Tuke and Andy Maloney) dominated the fleet races, winning five out of the eight races and thus gaining access to the final match race against Luna Rossa.

The Kiwi crew won the start and displayed textbook match racing tactics, keeping the Italian Luna Rossa under control.

Following Emirates Team New Zealand's victory, Peter Burling had this to say: "We put in a lot of effort, so as a team we are obviously thrilled to claim the win we didn't get in Vilanova. This has been a tremendous team effort. There are only four of us onboard, but behind this victory is an enormous team that created this class and this event."
