The Last Step, a New Beginning

Our journey to discover the protagonists of The Famous Project comes to an end – the all-female crew ready to challenge the ocean in the iconic Jules Verne Trophy. After Alexia Barrier and Dee Caffari, it is now time to meet Annemieke Bes, a sailor who embodies determination, clarity, and the ability to constantly evolve.

But the journey of Making Waves does not stop here. We will continue to meet other leading women in sailing and sport: women who, with talent, courage, and vision, are changing the rules of the game – at sea and on land.

Annemieke: A Story Written on Water

Three Olympic Games and a silver medal in Beijing 2008 in the Yngling class. A participation in the Volvo Ocean Race with Team SCA, the all-female crew. Today, Annemieke is a pillar of The Famous Project, where she combines strength in action with strategic insight

Raised among boats and lakes in the north of the Netherlands, she built her career navigating through victories, injuries, and team revolutions. For her, sailing is synonymous with freedom and evolution – like trimming the sails in the face of change.

A Tireless ‘Do-er’

There are those who seek the calm of the sea, and those like Annemieke who have learnt to live every wave as an opportunity to grow. She defines herself as a ‘do-er’ – someone who cannot stand still, who needs to build, chase, and do.

Born close to the water, she grew up quickly learning how to trim sails and, at the same time, how to face the changes that life brings.

Sailing taught me almost everything – how to make decisions, how to deal with disappointments, how to communicate under pressure.

Always Moving Forward

Alongside her achievements, there have also been difficult moments: injuries, team breakups, setbacks. In a world like sailing, where women are still fighting for space:

‘It’s a world dominated by men, and that already says a lot.’

Challenges that, however, made her stronger. And she kept moving forward, always driven by the same force: a love for sport, for teamwork, and for the constant challenge that the sea represents. Her symbol? A star worn around her neck: a small amulet that speaks of light, direction, and strength.

Looking Ahead

Today Annemieke looks to the future with the same energy as always. For her, making a difference means leaving a positive mark, creating a more accessible path for future generations:

‘If the young women who come after us have greater opportunities, then it will all have been worth it.’

Her journey, built on determination and resilience, today becomes an inspiration for anyone who wants to find their own path at sea.

Don’t worry. You’ll never really grow up. You will still love sailing. You will still love its challenges.
