SLAM and FIV: A Long-Standing Partnership
×
The history of SLAM is deeply intertwined with that of Italian sailing. Over the decades, we have stood alongside athletes and teams at some of the most significant moments in this sport, contributing to the development of technical sailing apparel and to the growth of a true performance-driven culture at sea.
One of the most important chapters in this journey is the collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV).
Founded in 1979, SLAM entered the world of high-level sailing as early as the beginning of the 1980s. Its debut at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, marked by the brand’s first iconic garment: the Mickey Bear — a fleece with zip worn by athletes such as Dodo Gorla and Alfio Peraboni, bronze medallists in the Star class — signalled the start of a close relationship with competitive sailing and its institutions.
This bond was renewed over time. In 2000, SLAM once again became the official supplier of the Italian Sailing Federation, sharing in the successes of the Italian national team and supporting, among others, Alessandra Sensini on her path to Olympic gold in windsurfing at the Sydney 2000 Games. This collaboration continued until 2008, spanning two Olympic cycles.
In 2020, SLAM announced a new collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation as Official Supplier and Technical Sponsor, providing the national teams with its expertise in the design and production of technical sailing apparel.
Active throughout the 2021-2025 Olympic cycle, the partnership took shape during a period of renewal for both SLAM and the Federation, with the shared goal of supporting athletes in their development and helping them prepare for the major international competitions.
At the start of the new partnership, SLAM CEO Enrico Chieffi highlighted the value of returning alongside the Italian Sailing Federation, underlining the continuity between SLAM’s history and the world of competitive sailing:
The Italian Sailing Federation also welcomed the partnership launched in 2020 as part of a path of renewal and continuity, particularly at the start of a new Olympic cycle. These were the words of President Francesco Ettorre during the press conference:
The collaboration with the Italian Sailing Federation represents one of the most significant chapters in SLAM’s history. It is part of a long-standing relationship with competitive sailing and with the institutions that promote its development at the highest level.
A legacy that continues to shape the way we interpret sailing: a discipline and a world defined by challenge and constant innovation.
