Después de un año de eventos cancelados debido a Covid-19, los yates de regata Maxi y sus navegantes han vuelto a aspirar a los primeros puestos.
La temporada Maxi se abrió con el evento de mayo, es decir la Sailing Week 2021 de Capri (que vio triunfar el Fra Diavolo de Vincenzo Addessi en el Maxi Yacht Capri Trophy), al que siguió una emocionante Rolex Giraglia, en junio, donde el Arca de Adalberto Miani SGR ganó los Line Honors.
Ha llegado el momento de pensar en la Costa Esmeralda: la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2021, en el maravilloso escenario de Porto Cervo, en Cerdeña, está prevista para principios de septiembre. Nos espera una semana de emocionantes regatas, con 36 barcos como protagonistas.
Las carreras programadas se desarrollan entre los escenarios más espectaculares del Mediterráneo, un destino vacacional muy popular y gran atractivo para los escenarios idílicos.

El organizador del evento es el Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, apoyado por el patrocinador principal Rolex y la International Maxi Association; la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup llega así a su 31ª edición, acogiendo, del 5 al 11 de septiembre, un espectáculo de 36 maxi yates protagonistas. Los barcos inscritos en la regata tienen esloras variables, entre 18 y 42 metros y proceden de diferentes países. Hay una gran expectación entre los equipos participantes por el maxi 100 ARCA SGR del Fast and Furio Sailing Team que ve al timón a Furio Benussi, ya titular de la Line Honors 151 Miglia y Rolex Giraglia en 2021, del que Slam es pareja técnica.
Estos barcos peculiares y excepcionales obtienen su propia regata dedicada desde 1980, gracias a la asociación de propietarios de los yates Maxi (el YCCS y el ICAYA, ahora IMA); desde el año 2000 este tipo de regata pasa a ser anual. También se han producido grandes cambios a lo largo de los años, con respecto a la estructura de las divisiones en competición: los diferentes tipos de maxi yates ahora se agrupan al máximo para permitir una competición uniformemente emocionante; entre las principales subdivisiones mencionamos la de los puros racer (el Maxi72), o el tipo orientado al crucero, a su vez ordenado por eslora y rating.
Hablando del organizador del evento, queremos recordaros que el Yacht Club Costa Smeralda fue fundado en Porto Cervo en 1967, por el actual Presidente S.A. el Aga Khan y un grupo de socios fundadores, y nació como una asociación deportiva sin ánimo de lucro dedicada a los amantes del mar y la vela. Además de la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, el club organiza regatas internacionales que le otorgan cierta reputación; estamos hablando, por ejemplo, de la Rolex Swan Cup, así como de los campeonatos mundiales y europeos dedicados a las principales clases monotipo. La promoción de eventos para superyates es solo el más reciente de los movimientos estratégicos del Club (recordamos en este sentido la Regata de Superyates Loro Piana y la Copa Perini Navi). También cabe mencionar el primer desafío italiano en la America's Cup de 1983, promovido por la Club, y el relanzamiento del mismo en 2009 gracias a Azzurra que salió victoriosa del Trofeo Louis Vuitton en Niza. Otro hito importante para la YCCS es la participación con dos barcos en la Volvo Ocean Race 2001-02 y el lanzamiento de la 1992 Yate a motor Destriero con el que aún ostenta el récord de la travesía del Atlántico en motor. En 2017 se cumple el cincuentenario de su fundación, coincidiendo con la inauguración del proyecto One Ocean Foundation, por la sostenibilidad medioambiental marina y costera, tan sentido y deseado por la Princesa Zahra Aga Khan.
En 2020 el Yacht Club Costa Smeralda lanza el proyecto Young Azzurra en la clase 69F, un espectacular casco de foiling que es extremadamente innovador y requiere un muy alto grado de competencia, Slam es el socio técnico de Young Azzurra.
