The Transat Café L'OR is unforgiving

Our SLAM skippers: Louis Duc, Arnaud Boissières, Manuel Cousin

background

The Bay of Guascogne’s sea beats down on all who dare cross it. Then, further south, the trade winds, the light winds, await, a challenge to be interpreted with patience and intuition.

The nights are long and humid, the boat breathes and speaks to those who can listen.

Here, trust and rhythm are what make the difference: the right action at the right time, two gazes reading the same wave, as if the sea had chosen them to tell its story.

In this voyage we delve into three ways of existing in the ocean: the consistency of Arnaud Boissières in tandem with Benjamin Dutreux, the human precision of Manuel Cousin in onboard alongside Jean-Baptiste Daramy, the effective ingenuity of Louis Duc together with Masa Suzuki. Different styles, the same promise: to keep up the pace towards the tropics, not just a fast start.

SLAM is their silent companion: dry when needed, warm when conditions are tough, our technical sportswear leaves you free to move. Because in the Atlantic, equipment counts, but it is the sailor, and the duo of sailors, that really make the difference. Being comfortable on board means keeping your wits about you, thinking clearly and making the right decision, at the right moment (when you need it the most).

Louis Duc, the ocean’s creative

Duo: Louis Duc and Masa Suzuki

The boat: Fives Group - Lantana Environnement (IMOCA FRA 172), Farr 2006.
Energy: thermal engine + hydrogenerator

Capable of transforming an IMOCA with his own hands, Louis is an inventor, a man of experiments. He knows how to sail with few means and great ingenuity. The ocean for him is a laboratory, an adventure. Double-handed sailing means quick thinking, invention, and trust. His pioneering spirit is perfectly aligned with SLAM: evolving without ever compromising on seafaring simplicity.

Arnaud Boissières, consistency

Duo: Arnaud Boissières and Benjamin Dutreux

The boat: 4CAD – La Mie Câline (IMOCA FRA 09), VPLP-Verdier 2015

Energy: diesel + solar panels + hydrogenerator

A veteran of four Vendée Globe editions and a tireless optimist, “Cali” recognises every sound his boat makes and is the epitome of ocean resilience: know your boat like a friend, listen to the sea and keep pushing. With SLAM he shares the idea that reliability and passion are the real equipment. He loves a long route and the Atlantic night.

Manuel Cousin, engineer and wave whisperer

Duo: Manuel Cousin and Jean-Baptiste Daramy

The boat: Coup de Pouce (IMOCA FRA 123), Lauriot-Prévost / Verdier 2010

A former industrial engineer, Manuel left the shore behind to follow a dream: the ocean. He brings the precision of his trade and the sensitivity of someone who has chosen the sea as his new life. In his eyes is the calm of a man who analyses and acts. In Atlantic nights, he knows that winning means remaining lucid, human and united with his shipmate. At the Vendée he taught us that “you win by staying human”.
