The story of the iconic clothing item that led to the creation of SLAM
Mickey Bear, the fleece that defined an era
×
It was December 19, 1979.
That winter was particularly harsh, especially for those racing offshore. Wool was the standard choice back then: warm, yes, but not at sea. One wave was enough to soak it completely, and once wet, it took hours to dry. Hours of cold and damp that every sailor knows well and would gladly avoid.
This is where everything started.
Four young sailing enthusiasts were facing a very real problem: staying warm while racing in winter conditions, without carrying the weight and discomfort of wet wool. Their answer came from a material that was virtually unknown in the sailing world at the time, and certainly not considered technical apparel.
Thermal fleece, commonly known as ‘pile’, was used mostly for soft toys, not for sailing clothing. Sailors were curious: they touched it, stretched it, and tried to understand what it could really do. Many had never seen anything like it before. The difference was immediate and eventually, some of them decided to wear it during the Winter Championship races: that moment marked a turning point.
The fleece they were distributing needed a name: something simple, familiar, almost ironic. They called it Mickey Bear, a nod to the teddy bear, one of the few objects made of pile at the time.
Mickey Bear was the first clothing item in what would become the SLAM collection. Its success was undeniable, and sailors asked for more. New editions followed: trousers and a sleeveless jacket, with refined fits. The fleece was no longer just an experiment: it had become a trusted layer on board.
Among those who chose Mickey Bear for its innovative and high-performance characteristics were professional sailors Dodo Gorla and Alfio Peraboni. In 1980, they competed at the Moscow Olympic Games in the Star class. Fast, determined, and technically solid, they won the bronze medal. On the third step of the podium, they were wearing Mickey Bear, alongside a newly created name: SLAM.
That moment marked the beginning of another story. One inspired by the simple need to live every moment at sea better.
