From the classroom to the ocean: sailing as a lesson in courage and freedom.
Dee Caffari: Beyond Fear
×
After delving into Alexia Barrier’s dream and her project of leading an all-female crew around the world, the journey of Making Waves continues with another protagonist of The Famous Project: Denise ‘Dee’ Caffari.
A guide and mentor for new generations, Dee has turned offshore sailing into a way to inspire others while opening new spaces for inclusion.
Before becoming a sailor, Dee was a P.E. teacher. Then came the radical choice: leaving her teaching career to chase a new horizon.
A British sailor and pioneer of ocean racing, she is the only woman in the world to have sailed solo and nonstop around the globe both eastward and westward. And she also took part in two editions of the Volvo Ocean Race, one as skipper.
Dee likes to define herself first and foremost as a teacher, in the deepest sense of the word. After years in the classroom, she chose the ocean as her new school: a place where every personal experience becomes shared knowledge.
For her, sailing has become a universal language of freedom, growth, and the transmission of values.
But storms were not the only challenges to face. In the sailing world, invisible barriers and prejudices often forced Dee to prove herself twice as much. Yet none of these trials ever undermined her determination:
‘In the world of sailing I always had to prove myself twice as much. But every doubt I overcame—whether mine or someone else’s—made me stronger.’
For Dee, sailing is a way to spark change: in sport, by actively promoting female leadership and representation; and in society, by advocating for sustainability and education.
On the water, Dee has found the most authentic version of herself. And before every challenge, she relies on a simple yet powerful ritual: choosing positive words that open possibilities, speaking her goals aloud, and never hiding behind fear.
This is how Dee Caffari tells her story: bold, determined, real. A woman who chose to chart new courses not only for herself but for anyone willing to follow.
