They make a young, determined and harmonious team. Alice Sinno and Francesca Bergamo come from very different backgrounds, but share one overriding passion: sailing. Francesca was born in Trieste, so the sea is her home, while Alice, from Rome, only came to the sport after years spent in athletics, although she moved almost immediately into competitive sailing.
Alice and Francesca have been racing together for over a year in the 49er FX class and are about to participate in the qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which are due to be held in Enoshima.
Alice, who is 27, brings with her many years of experience, most importantly her participation in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she came in nineteenth with her racing companion at the time, Elena Berta.
Francesca is 21 and brings with her an extraordinary determination, as well as a list of successes that includes the title of European and Italian champion in both the Optimist and the Laser Radial Youth categories.
The girls found it hard to get along at first, but now work in perfect harmony and form one of Italy’s top teams in the class. Alice’s rationality perfectly balances Francesca’s competitive temperament, creating a perfect mix of experience and fearlessness.
Tokyo could be either very close or completely out of reach. There will be many teams in Enoshima ready to do whatever it takes to achieve the greatest ambition of any athlete: Alice and Francesca will need to combine intelligence and courage to conquer their place at the Olympics. In view of such an important event, we met them for a brief interview, in which they told us all about themselves and their ambitions.
