Slam and Foiling Week come together for the Foiling Awards
The worldwide movement devoted to these incredible flying yachts, their designers, builders and sailors - which in July visited Italy’s Lake Garda - has established prizes in the five categories involved in the development and promotion of this fascinating and thrilling style of sailing. As sponsor of the Foiling Week circuit, recognised as the future of sailing, Slam presents the Foiling Sailor Award, which rewards the best foiling achievement of the year. The five contenders for this major prize are some of the world’s best-known sailors: Peter Burling, the 26-year-old helmsman of Team New Zealand, 2017 America’s Cup champion and already a legend in the yachting world, multiple Moth World Champion Paul Goodison and François Gabart, who recently set a new 24-hour world distance record. Not forgetting Liv Mackay, winner of the Red Bull Foiling Generation Championships, and Jerome Clerc, winner of the GC32 Racing Tour.
The Foiling Awards prize-giving ceremony will take place on 1st December at the Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa. Alongside the category sponsored by Slam, four other prizes will be awarded: the Foiling Project Award presented by Persico Marine (projects in the design phase but not yet in production), the Foiling Innovation Award presented by BMW (for foiling design solutions specifically applied to flight control, design or parts construction, excluding hull construction but including motor yachts), the Foiling Production Boat Award (for foiling crafts already in production and being sailed) and the Foiling Green Award (for foiling ideas, inventions, designs and initiatives that will have a beneficial impact on the environment). Voting for the winners in each category took place online, and was open until 23rd November. While the Foiling Awards conclude the 2017 season, Foiling Week 2018 is set to begin in Australia. From 11th to 14th January, the Woollahra Sailing Club in Sydney will host the forums and regattas of the foiling community. The following month - 15th to 18th February - Foiling Week moves to Shake-A-Leg in Biscayne Bay, Miami. The classic Garda Foiling Week, meanwhile, will be held from 28th June to 1st July at its now-traditional venue of Fraglia Vela in Malcesine.
